Andrew
Johnson
Oct 21, 1930 — Nov 28, 2022
OBITUARY
Andrew D. Johnson, AKA, A.D., was born October 21, 1930 to Ora Lee Browser and A.D. Johnson, Sr. in Brenham, TX. He graduated from Pickard High in 1947 and volunteered in the U.S. Army later that year and was part of the Military Police, (MP's). He was discharged in 1950 and his family moved to Houston, TX.
In 1953 Andrew married the love of his life, Laverne Pleasant. They had two children, Gwendolyn, and Stanley. The family became members of Antioch Missionary Church in 1963. Andrew was employed at the United States Postal Service in 1952 and retired after 36 years of service. While working at the Post Office, Andrew worked part time in the Circulation Department at the Houston Chronicle, where he became a full-time District Manager in the northeast area of Houston. That was the era of bicycle delivery. He recruited boys 12 and up in the area. Boys who did not have bikes, or had bikes that needed repairing, he contacted a bicycle repair shop and bought bikes for them. He received several salutes and recognitions from the Chronicle as Independent Distributor of the Month for good customer relations and the steady growth of his district with a low percentage of customer complaints. These service awards were a result of the many trips he and his wife traveled in the United States and abroad. He retired from the Houston Chronicle in 2000, after 29 years of service.
Andrew was very active in the children's programs at Antioch. As part of the Brotherhood, he was instrumental in catching fish and donating it to fish fry's for the children's fund. The car washes and fish fry's that were held at the Blodgett Site were the fundraisers for the children's trip to the National Baptist Convention in Miami, Florida.
Andrew was the first Black Assistant Boy Scout Master in his son's Boy Scout Troop. He was helpful in the Boys Scouts under Deacon A. J. Dickerson for a short period of time at the church. He volunteered one day a week to help with the inside maintenance of the church until he became ill. His last duty at the church was a member of the Finance Committee. Andrew received the Malachi Award from the Brotherhood at Antioch Baptist Church.
Andrew was a kind, hardworking, fun-loving man who loved his family. But no one came before his loving wife, Laverne, his one and only, who he adored, loved, and cared for during their 69 years of marriage.
Andrew was preceded in death by his parents, A.D. Johnson, Sr. and Ora Johnson, his sister, Billie Jean Tyler, and his cousin, Dorothy Raven.
Andrew is survived by his loving wife, Laverne Pleasant Johnson, daughter, Gwendolyn Baylis, son, Stanley L. Johnson, 3 grandchildren, Tasha Scott McCauley (Jamil), Leslie Scott Allen (Elverez), and Stephen C. Johnson, 8 great-grandchildren, Tasiah Rodgers, Jahz Rodgers, Jayhlin Rodgers, Ariel Allen, Ava McCauley, Ethan McCauley, Edyn Allen, and Logan McCauley, along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who held him dear in their hearts.
