Honoring The Life & Legacy of
Charles A. "Bubba" Jones, III
January 26, 1942 – June 4, 2025
Charles A. "Bubba" Jones, III was born on January 26, 1942, at Hermann Hospital in Houston, Texas, to Charles A. Jones, Jr. and Catherine Helen Broussard Jones. Raised in a nurturing and faith-centered home, Charles began his spiritual and academic journey at Our Mother of Mercy Catholic Church, where he received both his First Communion and Confirmation. He was educated in the Houston Independent School District, attending Bruce Elementary, E.O. Smith Junior High, and graduated from Phyllis Wheatley High School in 1958.
With a passion for science and a heart for service, Charles pursued a Bachelor of Science in Biology at Texas Southern University. During his time at TSU, he joined the Lampados Club of the Tau Epsilon Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated in the Spring of 1961. Charles officially crossed into the brotherhood on April 14, 1962. A dedicated student and hard worker, he maintained full-time employment at Weingarten's Grocery Store throughout college, exemplifying his unwavering discipline and determination. He earned his bachelor's degree in 1964 and later completed his master's degree in supervision and educational administration in 1973.
Charles began his teaching career in the Port Arthur Independent School District, where he taught for three years. During this time, he dated and later married the love of his life, Geraldine Williams—the former Miss Texas Southern University 1963–1964. In 1967, the couple returned to Houston, where Charles began teaching at Sidney Lanier Junior High School, and then he eventually moved on to Mirabeau B. Lamar Senior High School. There, he dedicated the remainder of his career, retiring in 2008. Over the decades, Charles mentored, inspired, and influenced generations of students, many of whom credit their success to his guidance and unwavering belief in their potential.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Charles leaves behind a legacy of devotion—to his family, faith, fraternity, and community. He and Geraldine, affectionately known as "Gerri," built a beautiful life together and took great pride in their role as grandparents. They made their home in the Almeda Plaza subdivision, where they became beloved pillars of the neighborhood. A man of faith, Charles was a devoted member of St. Benedict the Abbot Catholic Church since 1967. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Charles generously volunteered his time to teach Catechism of Christian Education (CCE) classes, guiding young parishioners in their religious education. Every Saturday evening, he faithfully attended the 5:00 p.m. Mass, where he also contributed his vocal talents as a tenor in the church choir. His consistent presence and active participation in both liturgical services and educational programs exemplified his commitment to nurturing the spiritual growth of his community.
One of his greatest joys was dining out with his beloved Gerri at their favorite local restaurants, Cleburne Cafeteria, Luby's Meyer Park, Longhorn Steakhouse Pearland Location, and Olive Garden Italian Restaurant on Old Spanish Trail.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Charles A. Jones, Jr. and Catherine Helen Broussard Jones, and his sister, Brenda Jones Wade.
He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Geraldine "Gerri" Jones; daughter, Vonda Kaye Jones Dargin (Chris); son, Vincent Charles Jones, Sr. (Monica); and his cherished grandchildren: Carlye Kaye Hughes, Vincent Charles Jones, Jr., Ashlye Christiane Jones, and Damien Christopher Jones. He is also survived by his sister, Catherine "Candy" Jones Brooks; sister-in-law, Cynthia "Punty" Williams King; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, great-nieces and great-nephews, and lifelong friends who will continue to celebrate his life and carry forward his legacy.
Charles A. "Bubba" Jones, III will be remembered as a man of honor, intellect, and compassion whose impact will live on in the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
