Fred was born in Payson, Oklahoma on December 25, 1935, Christmas Day. He was one of 9 children. He spent much of his childhood (1941 to 1952) in The Heights in Houston. His family then moved to north Texas for his father's job. Fred graduated from Gainesville High School in Gainesville, Texas, where his parents are buried today. After graduating in 1953, Fred moved back to Houston for the remainder of his life. He said he didn't care for Gainesville much!
He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred Penrose Michael and Monte Elizabeth Morgan Michael, his former wife of 35 years Kimi Michael, a son Gary Nichols, his siblings Minnie Lou "Mickey," Freda, Jo Nell, Ted, Mary Beth, and infant brother Darrell, and a great-grandchild, Kade Crawford.
Fred had a long career in civil engineering design with Leonard Shoemaker, LLC. He bragged about designing much of the water supply systems in the Spring Branch area. Fred was very conservative and saved money wisely, invested in real estate, IRA's, and CD's (at 9% back then!) Fred wanted to retire early at age 50. He miscalculated his age and accidentally retired a year early, so in Fred's nature, he went back to work for Houston Cellular for a year.
Fred proudly served in the Army Reserve and the National Guard for about six years during the Korean War.
Fred enjoyed cars, motorcycles and at one time took flying lessons to learn to fly. But flying was too expensive, so he gave it up. He also bought a Harley Davidson knock-off and enjoyed riding for a short while. It left him stranded on the side of the road a few too many times. Fred was a conservative guy and always hard working. He also enjoyed gardening. Before his stroke in 2012, he bought so many tomato plants, he even planted them in the front yard…to the neighbor's dismay.
Fred moved to Treemont Retirement Community in July of 2012. He enjoyed life there and participated in many of the fun activities and parties they had. He really enjoyed going to the dining room for 3 square meals a day. This last year or so he enjoyed the room service.
A huge recent achievement for Fred was his interest and investment in Tesla. He invested a small IRA in Tesla when it was $22.00 a share. He watched videos daily as the Gigafactory in Austin was built. We are even on the order list for a Tesla Cybertruck. Unfortunately, production was pushed out to 2023-24 before he could see it built. Fred watched Tesla and Elon Musk's business ventures and had faith that Tesla would be a huge success. It really paid off for a while. Though Tesla stock is down, he wanted to let it ride and had faith in Elon that it would come back up. He was proud to be able to leave the stock as inheritance to his daughters.
The family would like to give a special thank you Linda Parson his faithful Caregiver. We all appreciate her long hours and attentive care for Dad. We thank the Treemont Retirement Community friends, and Care 4 You Hospice Services for the love and care given to Fred. Also, a special thank you to granddaughter Stefani Crawford who gave her late-nights and wee hours to care for her Grandpa.
A memorial service will be held at Treemont Retirement Community at 2501 Westerland Dr., Houston, Texas 77063, on Saturday, February 11, 2023, at 2 PM. All friends and family are welcome.
