Mary Argusta Hayes was born on April 8, 1941, in Garrison, Texas, to Luevenia Clinton and Curlee Brooks. She moved to Houston at a young age after completing her education at Garrison High School.

In 1956, Mary was united in marriage to Elmer 'Bubba' Hayes in a ceremony officiated by Reverend T.L. Jackson. Their loving union was blessed with five children: Annie Louise Hayes (who preceded her in death), Mary Katherine Hayes, Vera Lee Hayes, Jim Elmer Hayes, and Clara Hayes. A devout Christian, Mary was baptized at St. James Baptist Church and was an active member there under the guidance of Pastor James C. Franklin and continued under Pastor Melvin Franklin. Her faith was a cornerstone of her life, and she cherished the fellowship of her church community.

Mary is survived by her Husband, Elmer Hayes and her Children, Mary Katherine Hayes, Vera Lee Hayes, Jim Elmer Hayes and his wife Gisela, and Clara Mae Hayes Dobbins and her husband Lenny Dobbins. And a host grandchildren and great-grandchildren, leaving behind a legacy of love and faith that will be cherished by all who knew her.

Mother Mary A. Hayes will be remembered not only for her devout faith and love for her family but also for her kind spirit and the joy she brought to the lives of many. Her legacy will live on in the hearts of those she touched.
