Life Epitome

Kelvin Jerome Johnson

Kelvin "KJ" Jerome Johnson was born in Houston, Texas, to Clifford A. and Una M. Johnson. Kelvin accepted Christ at an early age at Northside Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Dr. Cleothous Montgomery. Kelvin (fondly referred to as "Fats") graduated from Forest Brook High School in 1980, where he was the leading point guard and team Captain for the varsity basketball team. Upon graduation, he received a basketball scholarship to North Harris County Community College for two years. Upon receiving his associate degree, he joined the Houston Police Department on January 9, 1984, Academy Class #118. Then, in December 2000, Kelvin received his Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Houston-Downtown; this was one of our family's proudest moments.

On February 10, 1995, Kelvin was promoted to Sergeant. During his 38-year tenure with the Department, he was assigned to Westside, Jail, Central, South Central, Field Training, Southwest, IFR, and South Gessner Divisions. Sergeant Johnson received over 25 Supervisor Commendations, numerous Employee Commendations, 2 Assistant Chief Awards, 1 Life Savings Award, and as of recent,

in May 2022, Sergeant Johnson received a Lifetime Achievement Award, one of the Department's highest honors, from Troy Finner, Chief of Police. Although Sergeant Kelvin Johnson's professional accolades are impressive, he was more revered for being a mentor and role model for the young officers he trained, students he encountered, and the community.

On December 13, 1991, Kelvin married Ava Maria Malone, and of this union, they had two beautiful daughters, Kirby Nicole and Kelly Madison. Kelvin and Ava remained married for the next 31 years and shared a love for their children and family.

Kelvin was preceded in death by his father: Clifford A. Johnson Sr; maternal grandparents, Emma Jean and John Barefield, paternal grandparents: Harriett and Tommie Johnson; sister, Sherlie Segura-Taylor, nephew Roderick Segura, brother Darryl Johnson, and father-in-law "Coach" Thomas Edward Malone.

He leaves to cherish his memories: his wife, Ava; two daughters, Kirby Heard (Harvey) and Kelly Johnson; one grandson, King Harvey Heard; mother, Una Johnson; six brothers, Clifford A. Johnson Jr., (Gwen), John A. Johnson (Tori), Nolan K. Johnson, Kenneth R. Johnson (Patricia), Gregory W. Johnson (Carla), Tommy J. Johnson; three sisters; Vivian Lacy, Gloria M.
