Dr. Sharice A. Preston, a brilliant and beautiful soul, was born on July 28, 1984, in Huntington, New York. On July 28, 2023, on her 39th birthday, she peacefully passed away at her home, surrounded by her loving family.
Dr. Preston, a passionate educator and public health advocate, began her academic journey at Deltona High School. She completed her Bachelors in Biology and Chemistry from The Florida State University in 2007, followed by a Masters in Biology from The University of Louisiana Monroe in 2011. Her dedication to public health led her to earn her PhD from Florida International University in 2018.
She cherished her role as an Assistant Professor at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth), where she focused her research on theory-driven health interventions, particularly in relation to social and behavioral cancer prevention disparities related to HPV. She also was passionate about birthwork aimed at improving mother and baby health outcomes, in communities of color. Her passion led her to become a Doula and lactation consultant.
Beyond her academic achievements, Sharice was deeply devoted to her family. She is survived by her loving husband, Julian Preston, and their three cherished children: Tristan, Emory, and Corinne Preston. Sharice's parents, Elfreda and James McDonald, were always a source of love and comfort for her. She held a cherished bond with her brother, Darien McDonald. Additionally, she leaves behind a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, sorority sisters, and friends who she deeply treasured. Dr. Sharice A. Preston was preceded in death by her younger brother, Corey McDonald, who held a special place in her heart.
Her life was forever changed when she met her adoring husband Julian at a Florida State University reunion in 2011. After meeting, they talked on the phone every night building an unbreakable connection. When Sharice moved to Miami in 2012, she reconnected with Julian, and the rest is history. They got engaged at Notre Dame in Paris, France on April 6, 2013 and solidified their love through marriage on August 31, 2013. After their union, they welcomed their son Emory on January 17, 2014 and daughter Corrine on January 21, 2019.
Sharice also found joy and a life-long sisterhood as a proud member of Lambda Tau Omega Sorority, Incorporated. She joined The Prysmatic Mu Chapter in Spring 2006. She leaves behind line sisters, Le'Nina Hurdle, Esq., Elizabeth Massie, and Megan Dack, loving chapter sisters, and a sea of mourning enchanting Mermaids who were forever touched by her light.
Sharice's love for God was profoundly expressed through her dedication to her family, career, and community. Known for her kindness and compassion, she continually sought to uplift others, relying on prayer and faith to face any challenge. Her warm presence and steadfast belief in prayer's transformative power marked her as a beacon of support and strength.
As we bid farewell to Dr. Sharice A. Preston, let us remember her legacy of love, service, and dedication to improving the lives of others. Her light will continue to shine through her beautiful children and the countless lives she touched during her time with us.
Rest in peace, dear Sharice. Your memory will forever be etched in our hearts.
