Obituary

Reflecting on the journey of life, William (Bill) Osborn Brewster, born on February 12, 1935, in Pine Hill, Texas, embraced the biblical wisdom that there is 'a time for every purpose under heaven.' The 13th child in a family of 15, he departed on January 18, 2024, leaving a legacy of love and service.

A man of faith, Bill's commitment to honor and serve God was evident throughout his life. From accepting Christ at Bethel Baptist Church to becoming the first African American member of South Post Oak Baptist Church, he held various roles, leaving a lasting impact. Bill's educational journey, marked by achievements such as a Bachelor of Arts in Biology and a Masters in Guidance and Counseling, fueled his passion for teaching. His career spanned decades, impacting students in Cushing, Mexia, Aldine, and Houston ISD. Beyond retirement, he continued giving as a Vocational Counselor with Communities in School, shaping the futures of high school students.

Bill's multifaceted life included service as a sports official, board member, and a distinguished cattleman. A devoted family man, he researched the Brewster Family history and revitalized large family reunions. Despite challenges like the 2020 pause due to the pandemic, Bill eagerly anticipated and planned for each gathering, exemplifying his enduring love for family and life."

Bill married Shirley Dial on June 4, 1960, in Palestine, Texas, and they shared 54 years of marriage until her passing on February 24, 2013. They were blessed with one daughter. After Shirley's passing, Bill found love again and married Odessa Johnson on March 15, 2015, in Houston, Texas. Odessa was a loving wife, a supportive helpmate, and caregiver to Bill.

In remembrance, Bill is preceded in death by his siblings Levada Brewster, Lela Hinchen, Bertha Adams, Gertha Byrdsong, Ernest Brewster, Ray Brewster, Dosha James, Essie Hill, Jesse Clyde Brewster, Alice Tutt, and Oscar, Jr. His memory is cherished by his wife, Odessa Johnson Brewster; two sisters, Lona Phillips of Los Angeles, California, and Doris Brewster Foreman of Tyler, Texas; brother, Arthur "Pete" (Cecile) Brewster of Henderson, Texas; son, Billy Charles Pellum, and daughter, Shonthenia (Norval II) Edwards, both of Houston, Texas; and bonus daughter Sherita Coaston of Missouri City, Texas.
