Obituary

Richard Edwards Jr. began his life journey on December 26, 1951. He was born in Shreveport, Louisiana, the son of Richard Edwards Sr. and Mary Sneed-Edwards. He accepted Christ as his personal savior at an early age and was baptized at Evergreen Baptist Church, under the leadership of Rev. G.A. Cox in Saint Maurice, Louisiana.

Richard attended New Enterprise Elementary in Saint Maurice, Louisiana. He graduated from J.W. Gaines High School in Montgomery, Louisiana in 1970. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1971 and served in the Vietnam War in the Transportation Department. He also served in the National Guard and was honorably discharged in 1973. Shortly after his discharge from the Army, he made his way to Houston, Texas where he started his own business as a contract driver for over 20 years.

He had two daughters born in a previous marriage, Kenya and Tangela Edwards. Richard later met the love of his life and united in holy matrimony with Collene Connor on May 27, 1995. They were happily married for 25 years and from this union, was born Richaelyn Denae Edwards and he also gained another daughter, Renatta Jaleese Connor.

He was a heavenly lead singer in the Male Chorus at New Hope Baptist Church, under the leadership of the late Rev. S.V. Adolph until he moved his membership. After which he joined Bella Vista Missionary Baptist Church, under the leadership of Rev. Calvin J. Abraham, whereby he served as a gatekeeper (usher). Finally, he united with True Vine Missionary Baptist Church of Spring, where he blessed the church members with his delicious greens and his service in the kitchen, under the leadership of Rev. Darrin Moore.

Richard loved helping people, he never met a stranger. Nicknamed Richard Jr., by numerous family and friends. He would also try to make sure everyone felt loved and welcomed in his home. Richard enjoyed working in his garden and was well-known for sharing the fruits of his labor. He also enjoyed cooking, especially greens and gumbo. He was a loving, devoted father, friend and host.

He was preceded in death by his father, Richard Edwards Sr., and his mother, Mary Sneed- Edwards. The Lord called him home on August 19, 2020. He leaves to cherish his precious memories, a loving wife, Collene Edwards; four daughters, Kenya Brox (Greg), Tangela Whitfield (Olando), Renatta Jaleese Connor and Richaelyn Denae Edwards; two sisters, Althia Mae Gunther and Ora Lee Edwards; two brothers, Lemond Edwards (Yvonne) and Donald Ray Edwards (Loretta); three grandchildren, Destiny Edwards, Jeffery Samuels Jr. and Israel Turbin, and one great-grand daughter, A'milian Jhene Williams; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
